I worry often about the world that the younger generation will be inheriting, both in the sense of the jarringly stupid cultural (not to mention socioeconomic) infrastructure we've committed to and that they now have to come of age in, and whether or not there will be a world, period.

But I'm also the oldest of eleven grandkids, and it is unwaveringly clear to me how prepared this younger generation is to become so completely themselves to an extent we haven't seen in centuries. Watching folks like Ben and my teenage cousins and others doing their thing the way they are, I am just so absolutely sure that the toxic pseudo-abundances of yesterday and today aren't going to know what walloped them; literally, tomorrow's prerogative will be incomprehensible to all who will inevitably take it on the chin, and I can't friggin' wait to watch the kids wind up that first haymaker.

This is the most hopeful and badass message we can send out to young artists and critics out there. You're so right. The change will come from them and we won't know what hit us (in the best possible way). I can't wait to see the incredible stuff that comes out of the next generation too.

As a millennial -- there is SO much about this that I love and adore. I was definitely a Ben when I was 17, but I wish I'd had the same resources and/or outlets. I kept so much of my obsessions quiet in fear of being that "weird" girl until I got to college where it was acceptable to study it. However, I'm really happy that there are opportunities to now support those who are like us at such a young age while also indulging in our nostalgic younger selves ;)

This hits home! I was the same, mostly in regards to music. I used to run fan pages for bands on tumblr and twitter and NO one would know. I'd have serious thoughts on their actual music that I would write down and document and would only share with the fandom. There's definitely a veil that's been lifted now in the context of public discourse and content creation though I also recognize its vast downsides.
